Chanting “No more power plants!”, hundreds of activists and community members rallied at Rosewood Park Tuesday night to voice their opposition to the Southeast Region Energy Project, city of Vernon’s proposed 943-watt power plant. Residents of East Los Angeles, Huntington Park, Maywood, Commerce, and other communities that surround the almost completely industrial city of Vernon say they have more than their fair share of pollution and do not need the particulates and chemicals that will be emitted by the power plant. A court ruling made in July barred the city of Vernon from purchasing credits until an environmental study has been done. Protestors signed a scroll stating their opposition to the power plant.
