Hermon CERT Saves the Day

By Paul Aranda, Jr.

On the hot Saturday morning of July 25, volunteer members of the Hermon CERT gathered for an intensive simulated drill to enhance their emergency life-saving skills. The “victims” suffered various injuries during a massive magnitude 6 earthquake that had struck earlier that morning. CERT members encountered an array of scenarios: compound fractures, unconscious victims and an eight-month pregnant woman in labor. Led by a Medical officer and a Search and Rescue Officer, CERT members constantly faced new tasks and decisions as they encountered each victim. Firefighters from Station 12 in Highland Park were on hand to provide oversight and offer expert advice. The three-hour long drill stressed the importance of proper assessment of various injuries one might encounter following either a natural disaster or a routine trip to the supermarket.
