First Latina President in Dental Society’s 76 Year History

By EGP News Report

??The 1,200 member Los Angeles Dental Society (LADS) installed Dr. Sonia Molina, president of Molina Endodontics, as the organization’s new 2011-2012 president.

An immigrant from El Salvador, Molina is the first Latina to be elected to the position in the organization’s 76-year history.

She was installed during the Dental Society’s Annual Inaugural Gala on Oct. 25th at the Taglyan Cultural Center in Hollywood.

Dr. Sonia Molina, pictured right at a recent gala, was named president of the Los Angeles Dental Society.

“Los Angeles Dental Society, representing the dental community in the greater Los Angeles area, is proud to be one of the most diverse dental organizations in the world,” said Sue Merrell, executive director for LADS.

“We are equally proud to have Dr. Sonia Molina, the first Latina, to be installed as President … Dr. Molina will be a strong leader in representing our board and members as we address the needs of the community,” added Merrell.

According to the organization, Molina has a “keen interest in public health and health policy,” and hopes to development a support system for dentists who need assistance with their practice in the event of an emergency, and work toward a unified voice in Sacramento during her presidency.

“I think that the care of patients is critical, but so too is the care of dental professionals. Often dentists and doctors forget to ask for help from one another. I hope to develop a support system that will increase the quality of care for patients and support for dental health professionals. I also want to work toward creating a more unified body of dentists in Sacramento, so that together we can be more effective,” added Molina.

Dr. Molina received her Bachelor’s Degree in Biomedical Science from California State University, Long Beach, and graduate from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine and School of Public Health with a Doctor of Dental Medicine Degree and Master of Public Health Degree. Dr. Molina completed her Postdoctoral in Endodontics at the UCLA School of Dentistry.
