By EGP News Report

For the third year running, a Los Angeles area business group will honor Latino small business owners in Southern California for their “dedication, innovation and entrepreneurial spirit” at an awards luncheon to be held Jan. 31 in Downtown Los Angeles.

The Latino Business Chamber of Greater Los Angeles’ (LBC-GLA) 3rd Annual Latino Business Awards Luncheon will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Biltmore Hotel. Tickets are still available.

Companies vying for the awards will be judged by a panel of Latino business leaders in Southern California, according to Jorge Corralejo, the organization’s chairman and CEO. Among the criteria judges will use to determine award winners are business and income growth, innovation, community involvement, job generation, and excellence in industry, Corralejo added.

“The last two years, wining companies represented the best and brightest of today’s entrepreneurs-with major contribution to spurring economic revival and sustained growth,” Corralejo said.

While the majority of the awards will be revealed at the luncheon, the Latino Business Chamber has already announced that the top award will be presented to the Meruelo Group.

“We are thrilled to recognize the Meruelo Group this year with the Innovation Award for inspiring other entrepreneurs to take chances and start new ventures.” Corralejo said in statement announcing the award.

According to the Latino Business Chamber, founder Alex Meruelo’s leadership has led to “quality, innovation and diversification,” the benchmarks of the Meruelo Group’s success. “Meruelo’s business holdings have evolved from a single pizza restaurant, La Pizza Loca that opened in Los Angeles in 1985, to residential and commercial real-estate development. In 2003 Meruelo co-founded a bank, and in 2009 he acquired a company that manufactures and distributes Asian food items. Just this year, they bought a hotel-casino and a Television station,” states the LBC-GLA announcement.

Proceeds from the event will support the LBC-GLA’s entrepreneurial and business training programs, minority certification workshops, technology workshops, networking opportunities and small business advocacy work as well as other initiatives. Many of the workshops are offered in both English ad Spanish. Luncheon sponsors include Eastern Group Publications/EGPNews (publishers of this newspaper), La Opinion, LA Times/Hoy, Entravision Communications, Radio LAZER, Latino Print Network and Latino California.
