MUSD Board To Pick Calderon’s Replacement

Seat open to adult residents of the Montebello Unified School District.

The Montebello Unified School District Board of Education will make an appointment later this month to fill the seat of Marcella Calderon, who passed away at the beginning of the year.

Board members said this was in the interest of saving an estimated $150,000 to $250,000 in costs needed to run an election.

“It would be fiscally prudent in light of the fiscally challenging times, not to mention the interest that has been expressed by community leaders to serve as the appointed Board of Education member filling the vacancy that currently exists,” said Board Member Gerri Guzman.

Calderon and Board Member David Vela, both incumbents at the time, won in an uncontested election last November.

Calderon missed several meetings, including her swearing-in ceremony following the election. After the New Year, her family announced that she had passed away from cancer on Jan. 1.

“We have to do our due diligence given the passing of our colleague. The board should do everything in its prerogative to consider an appointment, especially because of the potential fiscal savings to our budget. I really believe we have great candidates in this community,” said Board President Hector Chacon.

He directed staff to include a requirement for the applicant to write a 200-word statement explaining why he or she should be appointed to fill the empty seat.

The district began posting advertisements immediately after the Feb. 2 board decision seeking applications from those interested in filling Calderon’s seat.

The advertisements specify that the applicant must be at least 18-years old, a citizen of the state, a resident of the school district, a registered voter, and cannot be disqualified by the Constitution or state laws from holding public office.

Candidates have until 4:30 pm on Tuesday, Feb. 21 to turn in a written expression of their interest to Robert G. Henke or Cleve A. Pell, Superintendents of Schools, Montebello Unified School District, 123 South Montebello Boulevard, Montebello, California 90640.

The Board will interview for this position on Saturday, Feb. 25 at a special board meeting open to the public. The board’s decision for a provisional appointment will be announced Feb. 29.
