By EGP News Report

The work of Mike Kelley, a Highland Park-based found object artist who died earlier this month, will be showcased at an exhibit beginning this Saturday, Feb. 18, at the Grand Avenue location of the Museum of Contemporary Art, MOCA. The exhibit runs through April 2.

Kelley whose work encompassed performance art, installations, sculptures and works on paper, had been an influential voice in the Los Angeles artist’s community since the 1970s. He was also closely identified with the music community. His work is featured on the cover of an album by the band Sonic Youth.

Kelley who had an art studio in Highland Park was found dead in his South Pasadena home on Feb. 1. He was 57.

The MOCA tribute will include 23 of Kelley’s works alongside artwork by others that he donated to MOCA through the years. Kelley’s work includes assemblages utilizing everything from aluminum foil and boom boxes, to yarn and everyday objects; as well as paintings and drawings.

Saw his stuffed animal installations at the Whitney some time ago and was very impressed with them. We all need those stuffers from time to time, especially the artists. The work seemed to aknowledge a need for infantile security in the hurly-burly world of contemporary modern American art.
