Bell Gardens Joins ‘Hub Cities’
By EGP Staff Report
The City of Bell Gardens has formally joined an organization created to leverage funding and resources in order to provide job seekers and businesses with no-cost, employment and training services, according to the city.
The Hub Cities Consortium, which includes Cudahy, Huntington Park, Lynwood, Maywood, and South Gate, was founded four years ago under the Workforce Investment Act of 1998. The organization is federally funded and administered through the State of California and the County of Los Angeles.
Bell Gardens last year began the process to include the city as an official member of the consortium, which is leasing office space in the Bell Gardens Resource Center for a local Hub Cities office, providing employment services to our residents and local business community, according to City Manager Philip Wagner.
Bell Gardens council members unanimously approved the city’s participation in the Hub Cities Consortium, and an amendment to the JPA, Joint Powers Authority agreement, required as part of the change, on Feb. 27. A Bell Gardens representative and alternate to the Board of Directors of Hub Cities board of directors will be appointed at an upcoming meeting.
Joining Hub Cities has no fiscal impact on the city, according to a staff report.
“Becoming a member of Hub Cities allows the City of Bell Gardens to further utilize the resources of the consortium to develop and administer programs for the delivery of job training, economic development, and other human services to the residents and businesses of our community,” Wagner told EGP in an email.
Bell Gardens employers and businesses, can receive human resources and consulting services, labor market information, and economic development resources, Wagner said.
“With the frail economy and high unemployment in the City of Bell Gardens, providing jobs for the residents of our community has and will continue to be a priority of the City Council. Wagner said. “Joining Hub Cities provides us with additional tools and resources to create jobs.”Print This Post
