The city of Monterey Park wants to begin operating a farmer’s market by May or June of this year, but is looking for feedback from the public about where and when.

City officials have scoped out two possible locations for the weekly market: El Portal Place, between El Mercado and Atlantic Blvd, either on Thursday afternoons or early evenings, or on Saturday mornings; or the Bruggemeyer Library parking lot, at 318 S. Ramona Ave), on Friday evenings, Saturday evenings, or Sunday mornings.

The Monterey Park City Council will hash out the details at a Mar. 7 meeting starting at 7pm. The council chambers is located at 320 West Newmark Avenue, Monterey Park.

The city will also discuss whether to grant a three-year contract to a vendor, Sprouts of Promise Foundation, to take over the market’s day-to-day operations and permitting process. The vendor will also bring in the farmers and do promotional work.

In addition to providing produce and other goods from local farmers, the vendor plans to bring in produce that fit the cultural demands of the city. The market will also have booths for selling prepared foods and for organizations to promote their activities.

According to a city report, the total cost of the market including paying for marketing, permitting, Sprouts of Promise staff and street closures will come to $21,800. The funds will come out of the city’s Community Enhancement Trust Fund.

In past meetings, city council received feedback from the public expressing support for having a market in the city, as well as concerns that it could increase traffic in their neighborhoods.

A farmer's market is coming soon to Monterey Park, but the "where and when" is still up in the air.
