Splash Like An Olympian

Olympian Patty Cardenas (center), an East LA and Commerce native gave back to her community, helping beat the “Summer Slump” of unhealthy behaviors at the Eugene Obregon Park Tuesday. Cardenas won a silver medal for water polo in the 2008 Olympic games and taught the basics of the sport to hundreds of East LA Youth participating in the “Power Up Your Summer!” (PUYS) Challenge’s Water Day event. The PUYS Challenge is sponsored by the Network for a Healthy California—Children’s Power to Play Campaign and the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation to tackle childhood obesity by encouraging healthy physical activities in the summer. The Water Day event also featured a variety of aquatic games. (Mirella Miranda, Los Angeles Department of Public Health)
