By EGP Staff Report

Chef Christy Lujan of Cacao Mexicatessen received el Premio Cua (Nahuatl and Spanish for Cook’s Award) for 2012 at the Taste of the Americas food competition at the LA River Center in Cypress Park.

Her competitors included the eateries “Ajo y Cebollas” and “La Casita del Mar.”

In addition to the Cook’s Award, Lujan also won $3,500 and a one-year catering contract from the Southwest Voter Registration Education Project (SVREP), the nonpartisan, non-profit organization that sponsored the competition.

Special guests in attendance at the garden-style event included Congresswoman Judy Chu, Mayoral Candidates Jan Perry and Wendy Gruel, City of El Monte Mayor Andre Quintero, and 51st Assembly District candidate Jimmy Gomez. They served as representatives for the Latino Vote 12n12 campaign that aims to get 12 million Latino votes cast in 2012. 12n12 is run by SVREP and the food competition served as a starting benefit event for its final mobilization stretch.
