East LA Landmark Mural Vandalized

By EGP Staff Report

Josefina Quezada’s “Tree of Knowledge” mural at the Ann Quinn Library in East Los Angeles is undergoing repairs after being vandalized sometime between July 12 and 14.

A knife was used to cut across the entire face of the mural, according to the Social and Public Art’s Resource Center (SPARC). The mural had just been restored in June in commemoration of the artist’s passing.

Thus far there are no leads on who vandalized the mural, or the motivation behind the damage, according to a SPARC press release. SPARC’s Mural Rescue Team is currently in charge of repairing the damage including adding new layers of in-painting, application of a solvent treatment to heal the surface, and a recoating of graffiti removal.

Isabel Rojas-Williams of the Mural Conservancy of Los Angeles (MCLA) in a written statement said, “It is disturbing that anyone might deface a mural with a message as loving and peaceful as Josefina Quezada’s Tree of Knowledge, whose work is so intrinsically representative of the history of muralism in Los Angeles.”

The mural, created in 1978 by Quezada, was the result of a partnership between the Citywide Mural Project and the Chicana Service Action Center, which had joined forces to present a positive portrayal of Mexican American women in society.
