Notorious Gang Member Arrested in South Gate

By City News Service

A gang member with a lengthy criminal history was arrested for allegedly stealing mail, South Gate police reported Tuesday.

An officer patrolling near Tweedy Boulevard and San Miguel Avenue about 10 p.m. Monday saw “a suspicious person near a parked vehicle” and decided to investigate, according to a South Gate police statement.

The officer spotted a stack of opened and unopened mail inside the vehicle and noticed a variety of different names on the envelopes, none of which belong to the suspect or the other person with him, according to police.

The officer also located “contraband commonly used to fish mail out of a United States postal box” and took Javier Vega Bejar, 25, of Bell, into custody, according to police.
