Villaraigosa Seeks to Bolster L.A. Fashion Industry
By City News Service
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced plans Tuesday to create an online resource guide aimed at boosting business for Los Angeles clothing suppliers and manufacturers.
The site – billed by the mayor’s office as the first of its kind to be undertaken by a U.S. city – will be aimed at making it easier for wholesalers and other clothing companies to find manufacturers in the L.A. area.
“Our message to apparel companies is simple. If you want it to say ‘Made in USA,’ make it in L.A.,” Villaraigosa said. “In a word-of-mouth industry, this tool will make it that much easier to manufacture in Los Angeles.” The site will be jointly created by the mayor’s Office of Economic and Business Policy with the Los Angeles Regional Export Council, and is expected to take six months to research and get up and running.
Villaraigosa announced the website plan while in Las Vegas, where he attended an apparel sourcing trade show with U.S. Department of Commerce Under Secretary for International Trade Francisco Sanchez.
The Department of Commerce is creating a similar site on a national level and the city plans to work closely on the national site, according to Villaraigosa’s office.Print This Post
