Parents and motorists are being warned to keep their eyes wide open tonight, when sidewalks will be bustling with little Halloween ghosts and goblins out trick-or-treating.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department urged parents to make sure their children are wearing safe costumes that can be easily seen by motorists and are free of stretches of fabric that can trip up the wearer or become a fire hazard.\
Officials also urged Halloween celebrants not to leave candles unattended and make certain that dried flowers and Halloween decorations are kept away from the flames.
The Sheriff’s Department also offered tips for trick-or-treaters:
—Always go with friends and stay in a group. Plan a route, use well-lit streets and tell family members where you will be;
—Parents or other adults should always accompany young trick-or-treaters, using flashlights, glow-sticks or reflective tape to increase visibility;
—Cross streets only at corners, not mid-block or from between parked cars
—Never eat candy or other goodies until you are home and the treats can be checked. Candy or food that is not commercially wrapped should be thrown away. Any suspicious treats should be reported to authorities.
