Residents, carolers and even Santa played a part in lighting Monterey Park’s Christmas tree this past week.
The festive holiday event included students from Mark Keppel High School singing carols and leading the crowd in a rendition of “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town” in front of Monterey Park City Hall, where the tree-lighting ceremony was held. Santa Claus then arrived by fire truck and greeted the children in the crowd before lighting up the non-traditional Christmas tree.
The city decorated the biggest tree in front of city hall with a star on the crown of the tree and lights hanging down the trunk over the branches.
Following the tree lighting, Santa and the gathered crowd continued singing holiday favorites as they strolled across the street to the Farmer’s Market, before going inside city hall for a holiday performance.
Choir singers from Mark Keppel High School, Rice Elementary, and Garvey Intermediate each performed classic holiday music including, “We Wish You A Merry Christmas”, “Carol of the Bells”, “Feliz Navidad”, “Deck The Halls” and “Silent Night”.
Schurr High School’s marching band also performed some Christmas music for the crowd and provided “jingle bells” for the audience to participate.
Before the performances, Mayor Mitchell Ing and his fellow council members wished the crowd happy holidays. Councilman Anthony Wong also encouraged the public to participate in other community events held by the city throughout the year.
