Former Coach Sentenced to 28 Years on Sex-Related Charges

By City News Service

A former Bellflower High School track and girls’ basketball coach was sentenced Monday to 28 years in state prison for molesting a teenage girl.

Bryan E. Shepherd, 49, pleaded no contest in February to one count of continuous sexual abuse of a minor and two counts of forcible lewd acts on a minor, said Deputy District Attorney Jessica Tillson.

Shepherd, who has remained jailed since his arrest in December 2011, is due back before Norwalk Superior Court Judge Peter Espinoza on April 23 for a restitution hearing.

Authorities said the crimes occurred between 2005, when the girl was 13, and 2010, when she was 17, and did not occur at the school.
