The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in downtown Los Angeles will remain open overnight Monday for an all-night prayer vigil in advance of the selection of a new pope.

The vigil will begin at 7 p.m. today and continue for 12 hours, concluding with a Votive Mass for the Election of a Pope at 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Every hour during the vigil there will be a recitation of the rosary and other prayers, according to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

A conclave of cardinals is scheduled to begin Tuesday in Rome to select a pope to replace Pope Benedict XVI, who retired due to health reasons. He was the first pope in 600 years to resign.

“This is an historic moment for our church,” Cathedral Pastor Msgr. Kevin Kostelnik said. “As Catholics, we pray for the Holy Spirit to guide the cardinal electors as they select our next pope.”
