Man Dies While in Montebello Police Custody

An unidentified man died while in custody of the Montebello Police Department around midnight on Friday, May17.

The man was taken into custody after he physically confronted police and fire officers responding to a call for medical help in the 1000 block of Carob Way in Montebello.

The suspect exited his home and began to fight with officers, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide investigators handling the investigation.

Montebello officers responded to the man’s alleged attack with physical force and used a Taser to subdue the man only identified as a male Hispanic.

Montebello paramedics at the scene attempted to treat the man, but his condition deteriorated and he was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead around 12:16 a.m., according to authorities.

A Montebello police officer was injured in the fight and also transported to the hospital, according to sheriff’s investigators. He was treated for a broken arm and later released.

The name of the victim has not been released and no further information surrounding the circumstances of the arrest or cause of death have been made available.
