As part of Vernon’s ongoing effort to reorganize, the city council this week appointed fire department veteran Mike A. Wilson as the city’s new fire chief.

Wilson will replace Mark Whitworth, who is also Vernon’s city administrator.

The change comes because the city wants to move away from department heads “wearing multiple hats,” according to the city.

Wilson was selected following a search process that lasted several months during which time several candidates were interviewed for the position. Wilson has been with the department for 25 years, most recently serving as the city’s Battalion Chief.

“It’s been quite a ride for me,” Wilson said.

Wilson told the council he will maintain the Class I service that the department is known for, but will also be “spending plenty of time looking at the budget” to find ways to reduce costs, including overtime.
