For 10 years, volunteers with Familia Unida have eagerly taken on the task of making the lives of people with MS and other disabilities just a little brighter, literally and figuratively.

Last Sunday, with Mariachis playing, people in wheelchairs and their families had the red carpet rolled out for them at the East Los Angeles Civic Center, where they were treated to a day of entertainment and pampering, including manicures and haircuts.

The nonprofit, East Los Angeles based Familia Unida hosted the event that yearly takes on the task of washing and tuning up the wheelchairs of people with MS and other disabilities.

People in wheelchairs find it hard to do these activities for themselves, and for many at Sunday’s event, paying to get it done is not an option. Some of the repairs and washing was done by individuals also in wheelchairs, a “great example of how people with disabilities have many abilities,” Familia Unida President/Founder Irma Resendez told EGP.

She said that people are already calling to ask when the next event will take place, and told EGP that it already on the calendar for May 25, 2014.

Other activities during the day included free health screenings and information booths, and healthy cooking tips from Chef Parra. Beth D. Zachary, president and CEO of White Memorial Medical Center and Honorary Chair of this year’s Wheelchair Wash was also honored at this event.
