The City of Los Angeles did not officially turn 232-years-old until yesterday, but public officials and others with roots in the region last Saturday celebrated the city’s founding by taking part in a commemorative walk and bike ride along the historical route taken by “los pobladores,” the city’s original settlers, from Mission San Gabriel to what is now El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument.
The nine-mile journey between the Mission and El Pueblo included several city officials, a contingent of bicyclists, a Boy Scout troop and descendants of the of the original 44 pobladores, who on Sept. 4, 1781 christened El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora de Los Angeles in honor of Our Lady of the Angels: City of Los Angeles.
At El Pueblo, Mayor Eric Garcetti (pictured third from the right) was joined by Councilmen Tom La Bonge and Mitch O’Farrell and City Controller Ron Galperin for a ceremony that included blessings by several religious leaders, Aztec dancers and birthday cake for everyone at the plaza.
