Fugitive Linked to 2005 San Gabriel Teen’s Slaying Returned to L.A.

A gang member accused of murdering a San Gabriel high school senior, then fleeing the country and remaining a fugitive for eight years, was being held in Los Angeles Tuesday in lieu of $3.1 million bail.

Daniel Guerrero, 27, was allegedly the shooter in the April 27, 2005, slaying of 17-year-old Ryan Dasalla, who was shot in the back about a block from Gabrielino High School in San Gabriel.

Guerrero was found living in Tijuana under the pseudonym “Joel Lopez” and brought back to the United States on Sunday, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.

Guerrero was thought to have fled to somewhere in South America, and the shows “America’s Most Wanted” and “L.A.’s Most Wanted” profiled the case.

Gabriel and Daniel Guerrero, members of a local street gang, allegedly attacked Dasalla in the mistaken belief that he had been involved in the beating of their younger brother the previous night.

A co-defendant, Sarah Toledo, helped them target him. She was convicted in of first-degree murder and conspiracy in 2011 and sentenced to 50 years to life in state prison.

Gabriel Guerrero — who was convicted of the same charges as Toledo — was sentenced in October 2010 to 84 years to life in state prison for his role in the attack on Dasalla.

It was not immediately known when Daniel Guerrero is due in court.
