Chargers Move On As Wild Card

The hopes and dreams of Chargers players and fans will continue now that the team has been dealt a wild card entry into the playoffs.
A wild card birth was thought to be a long shot, with the team having to rely on the defending Super Bowl Champion Baltimore Ravens and the Miami Dolphins to both lose to get into the next round. But luck was with them Sunday, with both teams losing early morning games, opening up the prospect of post season play with a win over the Kansas City Chiefs, the only team only to have clinched a playoff spot out right, that same day.
As luck would have it, Kansas City’s coaching staff decided not to play their starting quarterback and running back to save them from possible injuries. Then, with only seconds left and the game tied at 24, Chief kicker Ryan Succop missed a 41-yard field go attempt, sending the game into overtime.
Charger quarterback Phillip Rivers guided San Diego into field goal range, setting up the 27-24 victory. Phillip Rivers passed for 229 yards and 3 touchdowns. Charger runningback Ryan Mathews had a break out game with 144 yards rushing and a 6-yard average per carry.
The Chargers travel to Cincinnati Bengals this weekend as they try to keep theie drive to Super Bowl alive. Other wild card games have the New Orleans Saints at the Philadelphia Eagles, the Kansas City Chiefs at Indianapolis Colts and the San Francisco 49ers at the Green Bay Packers.
Denver Bronco quarterback Peyton Manning, who had season ending neck surgery in 2011, continues to add to his future movie story line by surpassing the Patriots’ Tom Brady’s 50 touchdown season in 2007 with 55 for a single season record and passing the Saints’ Drew Brees 2011 single season record of 5,476 yards with 5,477 yards. Denver, New England, Carolina and Seattle all have the week off as they wait for the winners of the wild card game. The Super Bowl is scheduled for February 2, 2014.
