A shooting at a Montebello apartment building left a man critically wounded Tuesday and caused three nearby schools to be placed on lockdown for several hours.
The shooting suspect was still at large Wednesday, according to police.
Montebello police Capt. Luis Lopez said the shooting occurred about 9:25 a.m. at an apartment building in the 300 block of North Second Street. The bui1lding is across the street from Fremont Elementary School, which at the direction of police was placed on lockdown.
Paramedics took the unidentified wounded man, who is 39, to a hospital for treatment of multiple wounds, Lopez said.
Police said they responded to 9-1-1 calls about a possible shooting, including one that came from inside the apartment.
According to media reports, police do no believe the shooting was random, but were not sure if it was gang-related.
The gunman may have fled in a four-door vehicle, Lopez said. The vehicle was described as a 4-door tan car with tinted windows.
The San Gabriel Valley Tribune reported the suspect was described as “Latino, 30 to 40, 6 feet tall, 200 pounds, balding with thin hair on the sides. The man wore a gray shirt and blue jeans.”
Lockdowns at La Merced Elementary and Intermediate schools and Fremont Elementary were lifted shortly after noon, according to police.
