The grand opening of a 59-unit housing complex in Boyle Heights was celebrated March 13 as Councilmember Jose Huizar along with the Retirement Housing Foundation cut the ribbon to open its doors.

The nearly $24 million affordable housing apartment is called “The Whittier” and is the Foundation’s third community project in the Boyle Heights area.

“These are beautiful apartments, with many amenities, making for a safe, comfortable and family-friendly environment, which will surely be a source of pride for all who will soon call this home,” Huizar said in a press release.

The Whittier has received more than 1,400 applications in less than a month, according to Huizar’s office.
