DA Won’t Seek Death Penalty In Boyle Heights Double Murder

Prosecutors announced Tuesday they will not seek the death penalty against a 26-year-old man charged in the 2012 shotgun killings of his brother and another man at a Boyle Heights home.

If Israel Lopez is convicted as charged in the deaths of his 29-year-old brother, Gustavo, and 22-year-old Rafael Aguilar, he’ll face a maximum of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The murder charges include the special circumstance allegation of multiple murders, along with an allegation that Lopez personally and intentionally discharged a shotgun.

Lopez is due back in Los Angeles Superior Court April 7 for a pretrial hearing.
