Monterey Park Fire Truck Crashes Into Restaurant, Injures 15 Patrons

By City News Service

A pair of fire trucks collided at a Monterey Park intersection Wednesday, sending one of the trucks careening into a restaurant, injuring at least 15 people.

A Monterey Park Fire Department truck wound up largely inside the Lu Dumpling House at the corner of Emerson and Garfield avenues. The truck had apparently collided with an Alhambra Fire Department ladder truck.

Monterey Park Fire Chief Jim Birrell said the crews in both trucks were heading to the scene of a house fire in southern Monterey Park when the crash occurred.

According to Birrell, nobody died in the crash. Officials said 15 people were treated, with one person in critical condition, six firefighters with minor to moderate injuries and eight other people with minor injuries.

California Highway Patrol Officer Martin Vasquez said the investigation into the crash was in the early stages, so it was unclear what caused the vehicles to collide.
