With an early morning ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday and thousands of dollars in donations to local youth programs, Walmart opened a new Supercenter in the southeast city of South Gate.
Local city officials attended the ceremony, welcoming the retailer they say will bring hundreds of jobs and much needed sales tax revenue to the city.
“I’d like to congratulate the many South Gate residents who rose up at public meetings and said that they wanted a Walmart store in their community,” said South Gate Councilman Gil Hurtado. “Residents specifically told us that they wanted the increased jobs and product mix a Walmart store would bring to South Gate.”
He said the store, which will be open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, will be the “jewel” of the southeast cities, attracting customers from across the region. It will be an important “economic engine’ for the city, Hurtado said in a written statement.
The 150,000 square-foot Supercenter is located at 4651 Firestone Blvd and will feature value-priced general merchandise, including apparel, electronics, toys, sporting goods, and lawn and garden items, along with a full line of grocery items, including fresh and organic produce, and a full service pharmacy, according to a Walmart press release.
Store Manager Fernando Reyes grew up in the community and graduated from South Gate High School. “I’ve come full circle professionally and today I’m very excited to open this store, and proud to be coming back home,” Reyes said.
Donation to mark the opening were made to South Gate Middle School ($2,000); South Gate Police Explorers ($2,000); Independence Elementary School ($1,000); South Gate Junior Athletic Association ($1,000); South Gate High School Band ($1,000) and to Teen Challenge ($1,000).
On Saturday April 12, Walmart will host “A Big Family Welcome” that will include family-friendly activities like face-painting, cupcake decorating and free food samples while supplies last. The public is welcomed to join the celebration from noon to 3 p.m.Print This Post
