Solis Best Choice for L.A. County Supervisor In First District
By EGP Editorial
Eastern Group Publications Endorses Hilda Solis for Los Angeles County Supervisor, District 1.
Solis is by far the most experienced candidate for seat No. 1 now held by termed-out Supervisor Gloria Molina. Her record on environmental justice issues is one that will serve the residents of the district well as they grapple with environmental contamination in the air, water and soil.
Solis’ tenure as U.S. Secretary of Labor gives her the experience she will need to work with businesses and labor groups to bring peace and better wages and working conditions to the county’s public and private workforces. While she is known to have political leanings that tend to favor workers’ causes, as labor secretary she proved herself an independent arbiter and negotiator at times when labor and workers were as odds.
Her experience as a state legislator, a congresswoman and labor secretary give her a broad understanding of both state and federal political and fiscal considerations that will be an asset to the county with her as supervisor.
They are qualifications that none of the other candidates for the office can match, and the reality is the other two candidates, El Monte Councilman Juventino “J” Gomez and Long Beach School Police Officer April Saucedo Hood, do not have the money or name recognition to pose a serious challenge to Solis.
She has won the endorsement of Molina and elected officials in many of the cities in the district, as well as a large number of labor groups.
That being said, we are disappointed that Solis has failed to launch a vigorous campaign to tell voters in the first district in depth what her priorities for the district will be going forward. We are also disappointed that she has not debated Gomez and Saucedo Hood, preferring to instead play it safe with her large lead.
While she has made many appearances in the district, like her campaign website her platform has been addressed in very broad terms, a practice not unnoticed by some constituents.
It is our hope that in the short time left, Solis will agree to at least one debate to demonstrate to district one voters that she can be a force to reckon with when representing their interests. By doing this, we believe she has every thing to gain and nothing to lose.Print This Post
