By City News Service

An armed man who allegedly tried to rob a store in the El Sereno area Friday shot and killed his accomplice during a struggle with the business owner and was taken into custody, police said.

The shooting occurred about 11:15 a.m. at Alhambra and Hollister avenues, said Los Angeles police Officer Nuria Vanegas.

A man in his 30s died at the scene, and his alleged killer, in his early 20s, was arrested, Vanegas said. The name of the dead man was withheld, pending notification of kin. The suspect’s name was not immediately released.

According to the preliminary investigation, both men entered the business and attempted to rob it, Vanegas said. The younger man was armed with a rifle, the older man with a machete, Vanegas said.

“There was an altercation with the store owner, who tried to take the rifle away,” Vanegas said. During the struggle, the suspect with the rifle shot and killed the suspect with the machete, Vanegas said.

No other injuries were reported.
