Man Charged in Series of Metro Bus Attacks

By City News Service

A 24-year-old man was charged Tuesday with attempted murder and other crimes in a string of screwdriver attacks on Metro buses.

Hector Resendez pleaded not guilty to five counts each of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon, along with three counts of battery.

Resendez allegedly assaulted eight passengers between June 16 and June 27, stabbing several with a screwdriver, according to the District Attorney’s Office. No motive has been disclosed.

None of the injuries was considered life-threatening, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

Resendez was arrested June 27, shortly after a stabbing occurred on a bus at Slauson Avenue and Atlantic Boulevard in Maywood. Five hours earlier, a passenger was stabbed on a bus at Figueroa Street and Avenue 26 in Cypress Park, authorities said.

The Maywood attack prompted a dragnet of the area by sheriff’s deputies, with the sheriff’s Headquarters Bureau confirming that Resendez had been arrested in connection with the attacks

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Renee Korn ordered Resendez to be jailed in lieu of $5.1 million bail.

He is due back in court July 16, when a date is scheduled to be set for a hearing to determine if there is enough evidence to require him to stand trial.

If convicted as charged, Resendez faces multiple life sentences, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
