Los Angeles County officials broke ground Wednesday on a children’s play area in Grand Park in what was heralded as the first major addition to the park since it opened in 2012.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Gloria Molina, who spearheaded the project, said the play area will provide a much-needed space for young children to exercise and enjoy the outdoors while visiting the park.

“Some of my favorite childhood memories are outdoor activities with my siblings and friends, and I wanted to create a special space with an adventurous environment for all children who visit Grand Park,” Molina said at the park that stretches from the Music Center to City Hall.

The new play area will include a custom 20-foot-high treehouse, tunnels, multiple slides and a three-tiered climbing platform that all embrace a forest theme.

Molina said the space will help accommodate the needs of the estimated 1,000 to 2,000 families that visit Grand Park each weekend.

“Soon they will have a separate play area where they can climb, explore, exercise and create many happy memories,” Molina said.

Funding for the project comes from a $500,000 grant from First 5 L.A. and an additional $500,000 from the county’s Regional Park and Open Space District, county officials said.

Construction is expected to be completed in November.
