By City News Service

A pedestrian died today after being struck by a big rig on a freeway transition road in Boyle Heights, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The accident occurred about 4:35 a.m. on the transition from the northbound Santa Ana (5) Freeway to the northbound Golden State (5) Freeway in Boyle Heights, said CHP Officer Tony Polizzi.

According to the preliminary investigation, the 21-year-old man was running across the traffic lanes when he was hit by the big rig, the CHP reported. His name was withheld, pending notification of his relatives.

The driver remained at the scene and was not arrested.

Both transition lanes were shut down initially, but the left lane was reopened at 5:20 a.m., Polizzi said. The second lane was reopened about 7 a.m.
