Mortgage Scam Targeted Seniors

By City News Service

A North Hollywood man was scheduled to be arraigned today on charges that he bilked three women in their 60s and 70s out of thousands of dollars while claiming that he was helping them to get mortgage modifications.

Jovanny Malka, 29, is charged with three felony counts each of theft from an elder or dependent adult exceeding $950 and grand theft of personal property exceeding $950.

Malka allegedly kept a total of more than $50,000 from three women aged 67, 69 and 72, with one victim allegedly losing $48,000, according to prosecutors.

He was set to enter pleas in a San Fernando courtroom this morning. If convicted as charged, he could face up to six years in state prison, according to the District Attorneys Office.
