Montebello Chase Ends With Car Crashing into Pole

By City News Service

A suspected drunken driver was in custody Monday after leading Montebello police on a chase that ended when he crashed his car into a power pole, police said.

The crash was reported at Greenwood Avenue and Telegraph Road about 11:10 p.m. Sunday, said Montebello police Sgt. Julio Calleros. Officers had tried to pull over the speeding car, but the motorist kept going, Calleros said.

The man, whose name was not immediately released, was taken to a hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries, and he will be booked on suspicion of driving under the influence, Calleros said.

Utility crews had to de-energize power lines so emergency workers could free the motorist, and power was interrupted to customers in the general area of the crash scene for a time, Calleros said.

Motorists were advised to stay away from the area until late Monday morning while crews repaired the power pole.
