2 Police Officers Injured in South Gate Explosion

Two police officers were injured today in an explosion in South Gate, authorities said.

Fire crews responded about 5:45 p.m. to the blast in the 5600 block of Imperial Highway, according to a dispatcher with the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

The officers were taken to a hospital, but their conditions were not immediately available, the dispatcher said.

The officers, one of them from the Downey Police Department, were injured  during a training exercise at a commercial building involving officers from multiple departments, according to broadcast reports.

There was no immediate word on where the other officer was from.
