By City News Service

A Pico Rivera man accused of fatally shooting his ex- wife and seriously injuring her boyfriend during a child custody exchange at her apartment in Whittier pleaded not guilty Tuesday to murder and attempted murder charges.

Efrem Ruben Lozoya, 38, faces up to 75 years to life in state prison if convicted of murdering Nereida Villanueva, 33, from whom he had been divorced for several years, and trying to kill her boyfriend, whose name was withheld.

He is due back in court Aug. 23 in Norwalk.

Lozoya — a contract employee at the Montebello jail — allegedly shot the victims about 11:10 a.m. July 1 after arriving to drop off one of his two children with his ex-wife at her apartment in the 13900 block of Coteau Drive. He turned himself in about 5 p.m. that day at a local police station.
