By City News Service

A contract employee at the Montebello jail was charged with murder and attempted murder charges Wednesday.
Efrem Ruben Lozoya, 38, of Pico Rivera was accused of fatally shooting his ex-wife and seriously
injuring her boyfriend during a child custody exchange at her apartment in Whittier.

Lozoya faces up to 75 years to life in state prison if convicted of murdering Nereida Villanueva, 33, from whom he had been divorced for several years, and trying to kill her boyfriend, whose name was withheld.

Lozoya allegedly shot the victims about 11:10 a.m. Saturday after arriving to drop off one of his two children with his ex-wife at her apartment in the 13900 block of Coteau Drive.

He turned himself in about 5 p.m. that day at a local police station.

Lozoya, who appeared in a courtroom in Downey, was ordered to be held in lieu of $5 million bail while awaiting arraignment July 18.
