Roosevelt HS Auditorium to Fundraise for Lost Splendor
By EGP News Service
Roosevelt High School’s auditorium is 86 years old and in dire need of restoration to regain the splendor of an era long gone, according to organizers of an upcoming event to raise funds for the eastside school auditorium.
Retiring folklorico and mariachi teacher Andres de la Garza and Chicano activist Sal Castro are hosting a fundraising dinner and concert —“Esplendor Mexicano—The Final Concert” — on June 11 to raise funds for much-needed repairs for the auditorium.
The gala dinner and recognition concert will also highlight Garza’s teaching career and his more than 30 years in the folklorico dance movement. Garza is an alumnus of Roosevelt High School and the school’s Folklorico Director.
Organizers hope to raise the $30,000 needed for new curtains and repairs to the curtain rigging system.
The auditorium has a seating capacity of 1,000 and because of its size, the auditorium has long been used for a wide range of programs in the greater Boyle Heights/East Los Angeles community. Because academic funding takes first priority a the school, updating the Depression Era auditorium has been sporadic, organizers said in a written statement.
“Esplendor Mexicano—The Final Concert” will take place at Roosevelt High School Auditorium on June 11. The dinner starts at 5:30 p.m. and the concert at 7 p.m. Admission and dinner are $30 for VIP tickets and $20 regular reservations. Student admission is $5. The concert will feature the Roosevelt High School Folklorico & Mariachi, the Folklorico Wilson Arrieros & de la Fonda, Mariachi Alumni of Wilson los Arrieros, Danza Teocalt, Conjunto Xi, Musica Jarocha y Huasteca.

This is going to be a great community event that will help our students in the future. Mr. Andres de La Garza has been a great teacher and director of the folklorico & Mariachi programs at LAUSD High schools for many years. He has given many of his students the gift of our Mexican Traditions. I encourage everyone to attend.
