House Bill Funds for Commerce Emergency Operations Center

The House of Representatives has passed a bill that included $1 million to build an emergency operations center in the City of Commerce.
The Fiscal Year 2010 Homeland Security Appropriations bill passed by a vote of 389 to 37, and is currently awaiting passage by the Senate.
“With this legislation, we provide our first responders with the training, equipment and personnel they need to keep our communities safe,” said Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-34).
The fund will be used to retrofit the old Los Angeles County Fire Department Fire Station 27 in order to permanently house the City of Commerce Emergency Operation Center, which would serve many of the cities in Roybal-Allard’s 34th District, including Bell, Bell Gardens, Boyle Heights, Commerce, Downey, Maywood, Huntington and East Los Angeles,
“I am particularly pleased that this measure includes [funds] for critical local efforts in the 34th District to improve emergency services and protect area families,” said Royal-Allard.
The center would have new state-of-the-art emergency equipment, such as 72-hour emergency generators, communications, satellites, and supplies necessary to operate and coordinate an emergency response team during a major emergency in Southern California.
