Boy Shot to Death After East LA Classic
By EGP News Wire
Dozens of high school students may have witnessed a dispute that left a 15-year-old boy shot to death just off Whittier Boulevard in East Los Angeles, and deputies said they are looking for several suspects.
The shooting took place on the same night as the 75th East Los Angeles Classic, a football game between arch rivals Roosevelt and Garfield High Schools. Over 20,000 people were expected to attend the event at East L.A. College.
The shooting occurred at about 11:20 p.m. Friday in a residential neighborhood in the 700 block of South McDonnell Street, said sheriff’s Lt. Mark Richards of the East Los Angeles station. The neighborhood is only a five-minute drive away from East L.A. College.
Jessy Acosta, 15, of Los Angeles, died at the scene, near the intersection of Whittier Boulevard and Arizona Avenue, according to a Los Angeles County coroner’s investigator.
Sgt. David Ladjevic of the East Los Angeles Sheriffs Station told EGP the teens has gathered for a party but could not say whether it was related to the football game.
A video crew at the scene reported that dozens of high school-aged kids were witnesses to the shooting in the residential neighborhood. They were taken by bus to Garfield, about one-half mile away, for questioning.
