Bikers Unite to Help Northeast LA Girl Recover From Cancer

Shiny motorcycles and leather-clad bikers took over the southwest corner of the Yosemite Drive and Townsend Avenue intersection in Eagle Rock last weekend, alerting the suburban neighborhood that a party was going on.
“The neighbors here were sweating bricks, but everyone was here for the right reason,” Shelly Kinder told EGP.

Kinder, the Ladies Auxiliary President for the Fraternal Order of Eagles (FOE) #2188, says the Eagle Rock aerie hosted a party and fundraiser Nov. 29 to benefit the 14-year-old cancer survivor and daughter of an auxiliary member.
Planning for the “Celebration of Survival” began back in August after Kristine Moreno did not feel well enough to celebrate her own birthday, according to Kinder.
It has been a difficult year for Moreno, who has spent most of the year at Los Angeles Childrens Hospital, Kinder told EGP in an email.
Moreno was diagnosed with cancer in January 2009. A month later she had two biopsies followed by four rounds of chemotherapy. In May she underwent a 10-hour surgery to remove cancer from the bone in her right leg, said Kinder. During her surgery, Moreno’s femur, from her hip to her knee, was removed and replaced with a titanium implant, followed by more chemotherapy sessions that continued into October, Kinder said.
Linda Flamenco, Kristine’s mother, is a member of the FOE Ladies Auxiliary, which engages in charitable community activities when needed. The auxiliary helped organize the luncheon, and auxiliary friend Manuel Montano spent months organizing the bike run “to help raise money for all the necessities needed for a young person going through cancer treatment and physical therapy so she can walk again,” Kinder said.
Local restaurants, Columbo’s Italian Steakhouse, Damons Steakhouse and the Red Dragon donated food for the occasion.
The result was a “luncheon beyond belief,” $2,750 was raised and over 150 Harley-Davidson bikers turned out to ride from the Eagle Rock Aerie to the Azusa Aerie and back to Eagle Rock.
“As it was said all day long, ‘This is a celebration to recognize Krissy’s bravery and courage and acknowledge her road to recovery in defeating cancer,’” Kinder said.
The Fraternal Order of Eagles hosted four charitable events last week, including a free community Thanksgiving meal for 450 people.
