Eastside Gold Line to Get Added Security Measures

Metro representatives presented information about added security measures for the Gold Line Eastside Extension during the Review Advisory Committee (RAC) held at Ramona Opportunity High School in East L.A. on Jan. 15.

Diego Cardoso, Metro Executive Officer of Transportation Development and Implementation, told the committee that Metro is working on their request for Quad-Gates (crossing arms), and will update RAC in February regarding design and possible intersection placements.

Using visually enhanced images, Metro representatives said safety improvements will include:

—Reflectors on the road for motorists heading west on Temple, west on Alameda, east on 1st Street, north on Indiana and west on 3rd Street; Box-dots (raised reflectors) at pedestrian crossing, no-pedestrian/no-bicyclists symbols on the side of the pedestrian crossing where entering is prohibited; Painting gate doors to stand-out from the fences at stations and improved signs, in English and Spanish, to help pedestrians navigate in and around the tracks.

The safety and pedestrian enhancements are scheduled to be in place around late February, according to Metro Spokesman Rick Jager.

At the meeting RAC member and former East L.A. Chamber of Commerce president, Eddie Torres, told Metro that the lack of adequate parking was beginning to negatively impact local businesses. A member of the audience encouraged Metro to use Metro-owed vacant lots along the line for parking if there are no immediate plans to develop them.
