MUSD Schools Receive Title I Academic Achievement Award
By EGP News Services
State Superintendent Jack O’Connell has announced that two Montebello Unified School District Schools are among the recipients of the 2009-2010 Title I Academic Achievement Award.
Montebello Gardens and Potrero Heights Elementary Schools were the two MUSD schools to receive the awards. They were chosen out of 238 California schools. These awards are only given to schools that receive Title I funds, as authorized in the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.
Title I is the largest federal educational program for public education, grades K-12. The funds help the school meet the needs of students living near the poverty the level. In the state of California, more that 6,000 of the state’s 9,000 schools participate in Title I programs.
“By earning these awards, our schools are proving that with hard work, great accomplishments can be achieved,” said MUSD Board President David Vela. “MUSD schools are strong and these awards are indicators of our continuing success,” he said.
To qualify for the Title I Academic Achievement Awards schools must show significant progress towards proficiency on California’s academic content standards in all students. Also, the school’s socioeconomically disadvantaged students must double the achievement targets for two consecutive years.
“At MUSD, our children are our first priority and these honors are only a reflection of the hard work being done daily at each of our campuses,” said MUSD Superintendent Edward Velasquez.
Thirty Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) schools received the Title I Academic Achievement award as well. Among the recipients are the Arroyo Seco Museum Science Magnet and Solano Avenue Elementary.
Jack O’Connell called the principals at each school to tell them they had received the Title I Academic Achievement Award. “It is definitely worthwhile to personally give credit where credit is due,” he said.
A banquet at the Disneyland Hotel will take place April 29 to honor the schools.
