County Appoints Replacement to Complete Assessor’s Term
By EGP Wire Service
Robert Quon was appointed County Assessor Tuesday.
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved the appointment to replace Rick Auerbach, who will retire at the end of the month.
Auerbach — appointed, then elected in 2000 — announced his resignation in January, though his term was not set to expire until Dec. 6.
“I have long felt that I would know when it was time to retire and turn this job over to the next generation, and that time is now,” Auerbach, 61, said in January. “I admit that I want to spend more time with five wonderful grandchildren who bring me so much joy.”
County officials are eligible for a scheduled cost-of-living increase in pension benefits if they retire by March 31.
Quon will fill the position until Dec. 6 at the same annual salary as Auerbach — $187,526. He will be replaced by the winner of an upcoming election for the seat.
Quon has 38 years of experience in the assessor’s office and currently serves as assistant assessor, the No. 2 position, according to documents provided to the board.
He has no intention of running for a permanent seat, according to press deputy Robert Knowles.
Fourteen candidates have indicated their intent to run as of Monday evening, but not all have returned their filing documents, Knowles said. The filing deadline, extended five days because the incumbent was not filing, expired Wednesday at 5 p.m.
Auerbach has endorsed his special assistant, John Noguez, who is also a Huntington Park councilman.
Among the other contenders, at least four other men with ties to the Office of the Assessor had filed as of late Tuesday to run — John Lewis Dortch, an assessor’s division chief, and deputy assessors Adrian A. Gomez, Dan Kumaus and John “Lower Taxes” Loew.
