A suspect was jailed in lieu of $1 million bail Friday for allegedly shooting a 30-year-old man whose decomposing body was found in a car trunk in Monterey Park, authorities said.

The body of Min Gu was found about 6 p.m. March 21 in the trunk of a newer-model black sedan in the 200 block of South Lincoln Avenue, according to sheriff’s officials. He had been shot in the head, the coroner’s office determined.

On Thursday, detectives arrested 37-year-old Andy Chen of San Gabriel on suspicion of murder, sheriff’s Deputy Ryan Rouzan said.

“Detectives believe the motive for the murder was a financial dispute,” Rouzan said.

Sgt. Bill Cotter of the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau said people told Monterey Park police a strong odor was emanating from the vehicle, leading to the discovery of the remains.

Chen was being held at the sheriff’s Pico Rivera Station and is due in court in Alhambra on Monday, according to the sheriff’s online inmate records.

Sheriff’s homicide detectives, who are assisting Monterey Park police in the homicide investigation, asked anyone with information about the case to call them at (323) 890-5500. Tips can also be provided anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS.
