Motorist Killed on 60-Freeway

A 19-year-old motorcyclist from El Monte was killed when he lost control of his bike as he was exiting a Pomona (60) Freeway off-ramp in East Los Angeles, the California Highway Patrol reported Wednesday.

The crash took place on the Downey Road off-ramp of the westbound 60 Freeway about 9:35 p.m. Tuesday, said CHP Officer Francisco Villalobos. The name of the victim was withheld pending family notification.

According to the CHP’s accident report, the unnamed man was riding a 2014 BMW motorcycle west on the 60 Freeway at a high rate of speed. He then tried to exit the freeway on the Downey Road off-ramp without slowing down. But he was not able to negotiate a curve in the off-ramp and slammed his motorcycle into a guardrail and was ejected.

Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene, according to the CHP.

The crash shut down the Downey Road off-ramp for nearly three hours and a Sig-Alert was declared by the CHP, which reported that the road was cleared at 12:32 a.m.

The accident remained under investigation by the CHP.

Fatal Motorcycle Crash Closes 5 Freeway

 A fatal motorcycle crash that closed three lanes of the Santa Ana (5) Freeway in Commerce was under investigation Sunday.

Killed in the crash at about 1:40 p.m. on Saturday on the northbound side of the freeway approaching Garfield Avenue was 19-year-old Joseline Celeste Hernandez of Los Angeles, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Hernandez was a passenger on a 2013 Yamaha R6 operated by a 26-year-old South Gate man, who sustained minor injuries in the crash, according to the CHP.

The Yamaha operator, whose name was not released, was splitting lanes in moderate to heavy traffic when the bike collided with three other vehicles, one of them a pickup truck towing a fifth wheel that left a narrow space for the bike, the CHP reported.

Hernandez suffered fatal head injuries when she and the bike operator were ejected, according to the CHP. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash closed three northbound freeway lanes for about four hours, according to the CHP.
