MONTEBELLO – Two men suspected of burglarizing vehicles at golf courses and a baseball field have been arrested in Montebello and about $50,000 worth of stolen goods has been recovered, police said Monday.

Officers responded about 4 p.m. Thursday to an auto burglary in progress call at the Quiet Cannon golf course, according to Montebello police.

“The crime was observed by an off-duty Montebello police sergeant,” police said.

The suspects, later identified as 37-year-old Juan Manuel Gonzalez and 30-year-old Arturo Avila, were arrested, police said.

Property from the victim’s car was recovered and returned and later in the day detectives conducted two separate searches at the suspects’ East Los Angeles homes, police said.

“An overwhelming amount of stolen property amounting to approximately $50,000 was located during this investigation,” according to a police statement. “A portion of the property was traced back to several other auto burglaries that had occurred.”

The other burglaries occurred at Quiet Cannon, the Mountain Meadows golf course in Pomona and the Big League Dreams facility in Chino Hills, police said.

Detectives will conduct follow-up investigations to identify other victims and return their property.

“Suspect Gonzalez has prior convictions for burglary, disobeying a police officer and assault with a deadly weapon,” police said. “Suspect Avila has prior convictions for domestic violence and battery.”

Police say the suspects used screwdrivers to “punch the door locks of the victims’ vehicles in order to gain entry.”

Anyone who has been the victim of a similar burglary was urged to call (323) 887-1255 and ask for Detective Valle.
