Electricity was restored Monday to about 200 Southern California Edison customers in Montebello who were without service after an outage that originally affected about 1,121 utility clients.

A power outage in Montebello left more than 1,000 residents in the dark Sunday night, but power was restored to all but about 200 customers Monday morning, Southern California Edison said.

About 7 p.m. Sunday, a transformer blew in the 1700 block of Germain Drive, causing a nearby palm tree to catch fire, according to the Montebello Police Department. The fire spread and caused other transformers to explode.

Initially, 1,121 customers were without power, but Southern California Edison crews restored power to more than 900 customers by 11 p.m. The rest had their service restored by 9:15 this morning, SCE spokesman Paul Nutter said.

Extreme heat and weather conditions were cited as reasons for equipment failures leading to power outages in other communities, including Long Beach, Norwalk, Lomita and Huntington Park.
