A domestic violence suspect who allegedly bit and choked his girlfriend and then suffered a broken arm while fleeing from police in Montebello turned himself in to police Sunday.

Conrado Ferrer, 23, got into a fight with his girlfriend at 1:10 a.m. on Saturday, said Montebello police Detective Paul Antista.

“During the altercation, suspect Ferrer bit his girlfriend on her finger, pushed her to the ground causing her to hit her head on a block wall and then began choking her,” the detective said.

Someone in a passing vehicle called police, but Ferrer fled when they arrived, Antista said.

As he tried to escape, Ferrer jumped from an apartment building roof and broke his arm, according to Antista.

Once in custody, he said he wanted to kill himself, Antista said.

Ferrer was taken to Beverly Hospital for treatment of the arm injury and a psychiatric evaluation, but at 5:19 a.m. Saturday he escaped from the hospital, wearing only a flimsy gown. A search proved fruitless, Antista said.

Ferrer finally gave himself up to police at 2:30 a.m. Sunday at the Montebello station, said Lt. Rick Rojas.

“Ferrer went home and his family talked him into turning himself in,” Rojas said.

A masked suspect fired shots at someone in Montebello, but the rounds struck nearby apartment buildings and not the intended target, police said.

The victim, a male whose age was not immediately available, said the suspected shooter, also a male, was crouched in an alley in the area of 125 Poplar Avenue and fired two shots at him about 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Montebello police Lt. Mike Flores said.

The rounds struck apartment buildings in the immediate area, Flores said.

The suspect — who had a bandana over his face and was wearing all dark clothing — has not been found, Flores said.

No witnesses were found and no vehicle was seen leaving the location, he said.
